White sneakers point toward the sky, ankles wrapped in blossoms — a sign that even what’s been broken can bloom. Janessa’s roots run deep in hardship, yet her steps reach upward toward God.

Like many women in prison, her path began in pain. Men abused her from her teenage years, and she turned to booze and pot to numb the ache. When her brother died in jail from an overdose, grief pulled her further into meth addiction, damaging both her health and spirit.

Then came the breaking point. A meth-induced brain abscess forced doctors to remove seventy percent of her skull. They told her survival was unlikely, yet she lived. Recovery brought seizures, memory loss, depression, and financial hardship. Eventually, she slid back into dealing.

In May 2017, an arrest became the turning point in her life.. Prison introduced her to Beauty for Ashes, a program that helped her find purpose again.

One day, she watched a monarch butterfly emerge from its cocoon, wings wet and trembling. In that quiet moment, she heard God speak: It’s time to be transformed.

Since then, Janessa has shared her story with Missouri’s S.T.O.P. drug court, spoken at victim impact panels, and prepared to join the D.A.R.E program. Her life now blooms in service, each blossom a reminder of what God can restore.

Her advice is clear and confident: “Look to God for strength and comfort.”
