He called in September, again in February, and said they wanted my story.

A five-hour Zoom call later, my words filled 7,000 carefully crafted lines in The Atlantic’s October 2020 issue. Mailboxes. Newsstands. Online. Everywhere.
When Husbadorr and I walked into Barnes & Noble, we spotted it a week early — and my name on the cover flap:
“Michael J. Mooney on Toby Dorr’s Great Escape.”
The piece ended with a nod to The Unleashed Series and sent my website traffic soaring. Emails from readers poured in. It even landed in the Apple News bulletin and became The Long Read in The Atlantic app.
